Seven upgrades to sort before your first 4x4 trip from Western Sydney

Western Sydney has some of the best four-wheel driving in the state on its doorstep, from Blue Mountains fire trails to the tracks beyond Lithgow. Before you head off, these are the upgrades that make the biggest difference, roughly in the order we'd spend the money.

1. Tyres first, always

Road tyres are the most common reason a stock 4x4 gets stuck or punctured. A good set of all-terrain (A/T) tyres suits most people who drive on bitumen all week and hit the dirt on weekends. Mud-terrains (M/T) grip better in deep mud and rock, but they're louder and wear faster on the road.

Learn to lower your tyre pressures on sand and rough tracks, and carry a gauge and compressor to pump them back up before you return to the highway.

2. Rated recovery points and gear

Never snatch from a tow ball. Fit rated recovery points to the chassis, then carry a basic kit:

  • Snatch strap and rated soft shackles
  • Recovery boards
  • Gloves, a long-handled shovel and a tyre repair kit

3. Suspension that suits the load

Once you add a bull bar, a canopy, a fridge and a full tank of water, the factory springs are often working hard. Upgraded shocks and springs matched to your real load give you better control, clearance and comfort.

Check before you liftNSW has limits on how much you can raise a vehicle and increase tyre size before it needs engineering certification. Ask us first and we'll keep your setup legal and insurable.

4. Front protection

A bull bar protects the radiator and front end from wildlife and scrub, and gives you mounting points for lights, antennas and a winch. Make sure it's compatible with your airbags and front sensors. We check this when we fit one.

5. Lighting you can trust

Country roads at night are a different world. An LED light bar or driving lights, wired through a relay, fuse and switch, makes it far easier to spot wildlife early. Neat wiring matters as much as the lights. A poor install is a common cause of electrical faults.

6. A second battery for camping

If you're running a fridge, a dual battery system with a DC-DC charger keeps your food cold without draining the battery that starts the car. Add Anderson plugs and USB outlets where you need them.

7. A snorkel for dust and water

A snorkel raises the air intake, so the engine breathes cleaner air on dusty corrugations and is better protected at shallow crossings. A snorkel doesn't make a vehicle waterproof, so always check depth and never rush a crossing.

The pre-trip check

Whatever you fit, book a quick pre-trip inspection a week before you leave. We look at the tyres, brakes, suspension, fluids, belts and battery, and check every accessory mount is still tight. Also check park alerts and track closures before you go. Some areas need permits, and fire trails close in bad weather.
