Will an independent log book service void my new-car warranty?

It's one of the most common questions we hear: "If I don't take it back to the dealer, will I lose my warranty?" In Australia the answer is no, as long as the service is done properly. Here's what that means in practice.

What the law says

Under Australian Consumer Law, a manufacturer can't void your new-car warranty just because you used an independent workshop for servicing. The ACCC, the national consumer regulator, says this clearly in its guidance for new-car buyers.

What matters is how the car is serviced, not who services it. To keep your warranty protected, the service needs to:

  • Follow the manufacturer's log book schedule for your kilometres or months, whichever comes first
  • Use parts and fluids that meet the manufacturer's specifications
  • Be carried out by qualified people and properly recorded
Good to knowIf a non-genuine part fails and damages the car, the warranty may not cover that specific damage. That's why we use parts and oils that meet your manufacturer's spec, and we'll tell you what we're using.

What a log book service includes

Every manufacturer's schedule is a little different, and the items change with kilometres. A typical log book service covers:

  • Engine oil and filter change with oil to the correct specification
  • Checks of brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, belts and hoses
  • Fluid checks and top-ups: coolant, brake, power steering, washer
  • Scheduled replacements due at that interval, such as air filters, cabin filters, spark plugs or brake fluid
  • A road test and a stamped log book, or a digital service record entry

Keep these in your glovebox

Good records make any warranty claim straightforward. Keep:

  1. Your stamped log book or digital service history
  2. Itemised invoices showing the parts and fluids used
  3. Notes of anything the workshop recommended, and when you had it done

Why drivers switch to an independent workshop

Dealers do good work, but plenty of owners prefer an independent shop once they know the warranty is safe. Usually it comes down to:

  • Talking to the mechanic: you hear what was found from the person who found it
  • Convenience: local, walk-ins welcome, and services often done in about an hour
  • Price: clear quotes up front, without the dealership overheads
  • One workshop for everything: servicing, rego inspections and accessories in the same place
